Sermon on the Mount – Fasting

Read Matthew 6:14-18

“But when you fast, comb your hair and wash your face. Then no one will notice that you are fasting, except your Father, who knows what you do in private. And your Father, who sees everything, will reward you.”  – Matthew 6:17-18 (NLT)

Relationships matter to God. Here Jesus first restates the importance of true forgiveness, mirroring God’s forgiveness, which is intended to restore broken relationships. Then he goes back to the importance of acting for God’s approval, not that of other people, this time in the area of fasting. We are to fast in order to seek God’s will and guidance, not to impress others with how much we are giving up to please God. In this way our relationship with God is strengthened. So if you’re confused, if you’re looking for guidance, fast and pray, and enter into a deeper relationship with God.
